9. Provide evidence that your classroom has a variety of assessment practices and explain how you use these to support students’ learning needs, guide their progress, and inform your teaching.
student need - Clarification
Assessment practice - Classroom discussion & e-communication
Students are strongly encouraged to share their need for clarification during class. This will often happen in the form of a classroom discussion, though sometimes it may be a 1 on 1 conversation or an electronic communication (which is easily accessible though our class website). All communications are responded to within 24 hours.

Student Need - To counteract incorrect ideas and to cover quickly ideas that are already well understood
Assessment Practice - Pre-Tests
Pre-Tests are used in order to assess student readiness.
Students are sometimes required to send me screen-shots from an exam-bank quiz by e-mail showing they are ready to move on.
Student need - Timely assessment
Assessment practice - Immediate multiple choice results & 48 hour written response with detailed feedback

Student Need - To work with ideas
Assessment Practice - Use of creative projects
Students are regularly given the opportunity to work with the curriculum in creative ways:
· Poster
· Model
· Song/Poem/Rap
· Story
· Comic
· Short Play
· Movie
· Presentation
· Web Page
By allowing students to choose a project that reflects their own individual strengths, while working with the same ideas as their classmates, students have the opportunity to negotiate meaning within the curriculum in a way that helps them to master the material while staying motivated and engaged.

Student Need - Self Assessment
Assessment Practice - Use of Exam Bank
In order for students to have a solid grasp of which ideas they understand clearly, self assessment is necessary. To this end, students are encouraged to use exam bank regularly in order to identify those concepts which require further work.

Student Need - Understand Curricular Vocabulary
Assessment Practice - Visual Dictionary
In the high school sciences, and especially in biology, it is imperative that students are able to understand the subject specific vocabulary. To that end, students are regularly given visual dictionary assignments where they must for each key term give a definition in their own words, an interesting fact related to that word or concept and draw a visual representation of that concept. Because drawing a picture of a concept requires understanding beyond that of simply defining a word, I am able to assess what words students clearly understand and those they do not. This is then used as a basis for deciding in which concepts students are weak, and instruction is adjusted accordingly.
